Do you know two kinds of documents? (2000,Oct-4)
If you understand there are two kinds of documents, you will be able to establish a documentation system with high value. High value means to satisfy a purpose with the lowest cost.
The two kinds of documents consist of "common documents" and "particular documents".
Sometimes you will find a lot of documents posted in a worksite. But nobody see them, because everybody in the worksite knows well the content of the documents from daily experiences. It is wasteful to distribute such documents to workers.
Therefore Toyota says such documents are not necessary for trained operators. Users of the documents are foremen who have to monitor work of operators comparing with the documents. These document are called "common documents" which are usually used for training of newcomers for the site.
The other documents are used to describe special characteristics of a work.
These documents are called "particular documents". You will see an operator in manufacturing site watch drawings carefully, because they are "particular documents".
If you have your driver's license, you will not read a driving manual during driving your car.
But when you have to make driving to strange areas, you have to often read a map during driving your car. Driving manuals are common documents and maps are special documents in this case.
