On the 18 th of February, the first Taguchi Method Forum was opened
at Tokyo, sponsored by JSA; Japanese Standard Association.
The forum was held from ten a.m. to five p.m. and the auditorium filled
with industrial people.
Four case studies were presented in detail.
In the afternoon Mr. Taguchi, founder of Taguchi Method, lectured
for about an hour. On his lecture, he emphasized the strategic aspect
of Taguchi Method. When he asked help from Ford in U.S. A about technical
design of engine, he commented that the basic function of gasoline
engine was gchemical reactionh, not effective conversion of gasoline
to generate rotation power as Ford engineers thought, which led to
miss evaluation of content of NOx gas.
But unfortunately four case studies did not based on his strategic
aspect of basic functions.
Taguchi is the Japanese third member of American Automotive Hall,
but not famous in Japan.
Generally, Japanese have been poor in evaluation of persons who have
originality in a specialized field. Mr. Taguchi is a good example.
With the new governor, JSA is going to strongly promote to develop
Taguchi Method in Japan. The forum is one strong step to the development.
But I wonder how many Japanese quality management assessors understand
Taguchi Method.
