There is a famous story about a centipede in " Sohshi", Chinese classic
book of philosophy.
The story is as follows. A person, seeing a smooth moving of many
legs of a centipede, said to the centipede " You are great! You can
walk with so many legs without tangling. Please explain its know-how".
Hearing the praise, the centipede became aware of moving of the own
legs and the legs suddenly began tangling.
I remind the above classic story relating to assessors' interviewing
for a job with a veteran operator who does the job well. In the case
the operator who does the job smoothly can compare to the centipede.
If an assessor asks to an veteran operator for presentation of the
operator's job, he or her may have some difficulty in explaining the
procedures, because he or her is highly eligible for the jobs, but
not for oral presentations.
Sometimes it is difficult for you to make oral presentation of your
own routine jobs clearly.
In Toyota production system, education and training have different
meanings.
Education means to learn systematic knowledge by brain and training
means to learn jobs by body (experiences). Therefore, job standards
posted up at job sites are for shop leaders, not for operators, because
operators have job procedures in their bodies and no tome to see the
procedures to keep on his or her standard time.
In conclusion, interviewing an operator for his or her job is not
an effective way of assessments. An operator who has poor oral presentation
is often rich in his or her job performance.
