Job standards for foreigners

Mr. A: Before I once worked in a machinery shop. At that time there were many Brazilian workers. When ISO9001 assessment was done at the factory an assessor came to shop site and questioned a Brazilian worker about his job showing the detailed job standard written in Japanese. The assessor asked “Can you read the standard”. He said “No,” There happened hell to pay.
I : How about countermeasures?
Mr. A:

We had no specialist in Spanish in the factory. Moreover in future people other foreign countries may come such as a Pakistani. Then we decide to write job standards in illustrations. After then the factory site became overflowed with illustrations. But I had a doubt about the scene, because no Brazilians were sawing the illustrations.


I : The assessor and the factory members had an obstinate preoccupation that document first ( refer to “Two different paradigms related toISO9000: Mar.1w,2003” in Basic knowledge corner on the web-site).
In fact at the assessment scene had the Brazilian acquired skill of the job already and been doing the job well, had not he?

Mr. A: That’s right. Since several months ago he had been doing his job well. So first we had had no concerns on him at the assessment.
I : It meant that someone in the factory had effectively instructed the Brazilian without any written language. Most important thing in training of site floor jobs is instruct how to move body effectively using body language. An instructor has to show how to move by showing his or her body moving in actual status. ISO9001 tends to place importance on written language rather than body language, but without body language any written language is helpless for effective training.

Mr. A: Yes, Later I wrote the operating sequence numbers on about thirty machines in my shop. At that time I had feeling of doubt on necessity for detailed job standards.

I : In that case if you want to make the job standards, the sentence just describing as operating followed with sequence numbers on each machine is perfect.
Mr. A: It associates me swimming, operation of PC and car driving. I began those learning with moving my body as instructed by somebody senior with no papers.
